The 4+4 Collaborative Affiliation Agreement with the Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Adelphi University and the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 4+4 collaborative affiliation agreement that will provide students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree and a doctor of pharmacy degree. 

For over 130 years, the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has continually been a leader in the education of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, renowned for innovation in clinical practice and research. The school is accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) and is the #1 ranked school of pharmacy in New York State #22 in the United States.

Adelphi University and the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences agree to cooperate in providing 4 + 4 undergraduate/professional school education leading to the baccalaureate degree from Adelphi University and the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University at Buffalo. The first phase (undergraduate) of the collaborative program will consist of the completion of a BA or BS program/major in Chemistry at Adelphi University.  Under certain conditions after completing specific courses approved by the Chemistry Department of Adelphi University and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences a student may be able to shorten the period of undergraduate education by either a semester or possibly a year. Any exception to the 4+4 program must be made with special permission.

Applicants must be an Adelphi University full time student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Applicants either indicate their interest in the program upon application to Adelphi or during their first three years of undergraduate study by completing an application available in the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Fellowships.  All students must meet the following:

1- Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 at Adelphi University.

2- All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed with a grade of C or better.

3- Students must complete at least one year of English composition, one year of biology, one year of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of calculus, one semester of physics, one semester of statistics, one semester of microbiology, one semester of anatomy, one year of physiology, one semester of biochemistry, and one semester of any social or behavioral science.

4- Receive a favorable letter of recommendation from the Adelphi University Committee as a part of the 3 required PharmCAS letters of recommendations.

5- The PCAT is required for all PharmCAS applicants.  There is no minimum score requirement, but scores at or above the national average are considered highly competitive for entry. If taken three or more times, the average of all the scores is considered. Applicants are encouraged to take the Official PCAT Multiple Choice Practice Tests (examinees who take this usually score higher). PCAT test over three years old are not acceptable.

6- Submit an application through the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS) during the fall of their senior year, no later than October 1. 

7- Invitation for a formal interview at University at Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for program participants who have manifest scholastic achievement, aptitude, personal qualifications including communication skills, leadership ability plus community service, health care-related or research experience, and motivation for pursuing a career in pharmacy.
