University College General Education and Core Requirements
All University College students must meet the requirement of four core courses and six distribution courses, as described here.
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Literature
A Bachelor of Arts in Literature provides students with a broad base of knowledge and critical thinking skills valued by employers in virtually every occupational field. The B.A. in Literature helps students develop skills in the key areas of written communication, problem solving, analytical and critical thinking, and interpersonal understanding. In addition, students gain an opportunity to develop and implement ideas, expand literacy, develop research techniques, and fine tune analytical and presentation tools. Focus is put on strengthening the student’s ability to formulate and evaluate their own arguments as well as those of others. Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Literature
Required GPA: 2.0
Major GPA: 2.5
Credits Required for Major: 40
Credits Required to Graduate: 120 Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Literature or Social Sciences
Candidates for these degrees must have completed at least 120 credits, 90 of which must be in the liberal arts. 40 credits are required for this major. The final 30 credits must be taken in graded course work at the University, and no more than 60 of total credits may be awarded from prior learning. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in their area of concentration and a minimum GPA of 2.0 from Adelphi overall. Requirements for the B.A. in Literature or Social Science:
The distribution requirement for the Bachelor of Arts will be fulfilled as follows:
- Three foundation courses in the appropriate area of concentration.
- A minimum of 16 credits of advanced electives in the appropriate area of concentration or specialization.
- Capstone I and II
University College Bachelor Degree Capstone Courses
All University College bachelor’s degree programs (excepting the B.S. in Business, the B.S. in Criminal Justice, and the B.A. in Psychology), are completed by taking a sequence of two 4-credit capstone courses:
The Baccalaureate Capstone is an interdisciplinary seminar that examines how the ideas of the modern age have challenged and altered traditional ways of thinking. As an analysis of the seminal ideas of modernity as defined by the thinkers who originated them, the Baccalaureate Capstone will empower students to think about the world in new and exciting ways.
