4/3 B.S./D.P.T. Early Decision Program

Bachelor of Science Degree from Adelphi University/Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from New York Institute of Technology


Adelphi University has an Early Decision Program with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in which students study for four years at Adelphi and earn their B.S. degree in Exercise Science. The Early Decision program is designed
to facilitate the admission of Adelphi University students into NYIT’s D.P.T. program. After successful completion of the fourth year at NYIT, students are eligible for the D.P.T. degree. Eligibility to this program is limited to four students.

Early Decision Program Eligibility Requirements 

  • Completion of B.S. degree with Adelphi and the following pre-requisite coursework at Adelphi:

       o Biology with lab: BIO 111  & BIO 112  
       o Chemistry with lab: CHE 111  & CHE 112  
       o Anatomy & Physiology: BIO 203  and BIO 204  
       o Physics with lab: PHY 111  or PHY 113  & PHY 112  or PHY 114  
       o 2 English Classes
       o 2 Psychology courses: Psychology: PIA 101  and one advanced level psychology course
       o Statistics: MTH 113  

  • Maintain a 3.2 overall GPA
  • No science or math grades below a grade of B.
  • No grade of D or F in any course.
  • Completion of a minimum of 200 hours of volunteer/paid experience with PT supervision (by end of sophomore year); By the time the student graduates they should have 400 hours volunteer/paid experience with PT supervision.
  • A favorable recommendation from the Exercise Science program director at AU.
  • Recommendation by NYIT DPT faculty based on a personal interview.
  • Complete the following steps to apply by May 30 th after your sophomore year (60 credits must be complete):

       o Complete an online NYIT Graduate Application
       o Submit PT and Exercise Science Director recommendation letter to NYIT’s documents portal
       o Submit an essay addressing the topic, “Why are you pursuing the field of physical therapy and why are you selecting NYIT’s program?”
       o The student must submit a formal Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) as an early decision applicant.

  • Admissions Decision by August 30 following the sophomore year.


Students enrolled in this program who do not meet the criteria have the option of applying for admission to NYIT’s DPT program through the standard application process.
