The combined Computer Science/Applied Math and Data Science 5-year program provides students with the opportunity to complete a BS and MS within 5 years of study. It is intended primarily for students who would like to 1) accelerate their graduate schooling by one year; and 2) gain specialized training for employment in computer or data science fields beyond the Bachelor of Science degree. A maximum of 12 credits associated with these courses may be applied to meet the degree requirements for both the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Data Science.  Upon earning the Computer Science, B.S., with permission of the Graduate Program Director, students may matriculate into the Master of Science degree. The graduate credits earned during the undergraduate years (see below) will be added to the student’s graduate transcript, enabling the completion of the Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Data Science with as little as 18 credits in the fifth year.

4+1 Criteria (include GPA requirements):

  • Met all of the requirements of the undergraduate major, as well as those relevant to the overall undergraduate degree;
  • Maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.2 or higher in the undergraduate major (Computer Science) during the final four semesters;
  • Maintain an overall Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher in all undergraduate studies during the students final six semesters;
  • Have permission of the Graduate Program Director for Applied Mathematics and Data Science to enroll in the designated graduate level courses, subject to the requirements of each degree at the time of entry;
  • Only graduate courses with an earned grade of B (3.0/4.0) or higher, taken while enrolled as an undergraduate, will also count toward the Master’s degree requirements.
  • Matriculate into the Master’s program immediately upon completing the Bachelor’s degree.

Breadth Requirement

Students must choose one course from each of the following four areas: Analysis and Foundations of Data Science, Applied Statistics and Data Science, Industrial Mathematics, Mathematical Modeling. Students must also complete 9 credits of free graduate electives chosen in consultation with their advisor.

Courses counted toward both degrees

Up to 12 credits of 500 and/or 600-level, with Graduate Program Director approval. Examples: CSC 530, CSC 553, CSC 580, CSC 678, CSC 620, CSC 575, MTH 601, MTH 590.
