Recent events have demonstrated the importance of emergency preparedness for professionals in business, insurance, health care, travel and tourism, education and public service. To meet the critical need for trained professionals who can respond effectively to emergency situations, the College of Professional and Continuing Studies offers an interdisciplinary graduate certificate in Emergency Management. This 15-credit program consists of five courses that maximize the extensive resources of the Schools of Nursing and Social Work, the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology and the College of Arts of Sciences.

Degree Overview

Emergency services organizations are a critical part of our society. Response to, and protection from, fire, hazardous materials, public safety threats and other emergencies are crucial to the public welfare. The management and leadership of public safety personnel, whether in law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services, emergency telecommunications, or corrections, are vital to the success of these organizations in carrying out their mission of protecting and serving the public.

This is a five-course, 15-credit, Graduate Certificate program that can be completed within one year. The plan of study includes four required core courses, and a choice of one other emergency management elective course. Courses taken in completion of the certificate can be applied to the M.S. in Emergency Management program. If a student has taken coursework similar to a course within their program of study, they may request that the course be transferred into their program at Adelphi.  To make this request, the student must provide their advisor with the syllabus from the course and a copy of their transcript demonstrating course completion, with a grade of B or higher.  If the course is deemed to be equivalent, the program may transfer the course in. Up to three credits (1 courses) can be transferred in total.
