Course Requirements
All the students are required that they complete the following course work before applying for admission to Columbia University, Combined Plan Program. The exact details of the courses depends on the student’s academic background and the academic and professional goals of the student. The students are strongly advised to discuss the details with the Columbia Combined Plan Director Dr. Gottipaty N Rao and other faculty listed below to tailor to the student’s specific background and professional goals.
A. Complete all the required courses to graduate in your specific undergraduate major from Adelphi University
B. Columbia Foundational courses required for al engineering majors at Columbia. Details are available https://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/apply/combined-plan
C. Major Specific course work required by the Columbia University as prerequisites to be completed at Adelphi for the specific major to be pursued at Columbia. For specific details, please consult your advisor, the program liaison and refer https://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/apply/combined-plan
D. General Education requirements of Adelphi and Columbia. Adelphi Gen Ed requirements are similar to Columbia requirements with some important variations. Please consult Combined Plan Program Director and also refer https://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/apply/combined-plan
Note:
* Computer science majors are exempt from MTH 244
** MTH 253 is highly recommended and preferred by some concentrations
*** PHY 211 satisfies Columbia’s prerequisite for Calculus IV.
Suggested Humanities Courses:
The 4-2 B.S. (Adelphi) M.S (Columbia) Program
The 4-2 Master of Science Program provides the opportunity for students holding bachelor’s degrees from Adelphi University with majors in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or certain other physical sciences to receive the M.S. degree after two years of study at Columbia in the following fields of engineering and applied science: biomedical, chemical, civil, computer science, Earth and environmental, electrical, industrial, and mechanical engineering; applied physics; applied mathematics; engineering mechanics; operations research; and materials science. For more information, please visit https://bulletin.engineering.columbia.edu/4-2-master-science-program.
Each applicant must produce evidence of an outstanding undergraduate record, including superior performance in physics and mathematics through differential equations. The program of study will be individually designed in consultation with a faculty adviser and will integrate undergraduate work with the field of engineering or applied science the student chooses to follow. During the first year, the program will consist primarily of basic undergraduate courses; during the second year, the program will consist of graduate courses in the selected field. The student must complete at least 30 credits of graduate study to qualify for the degree.
A student whose background may require supplementary preparation in some specific area, or who has been out of school for a considerable period, will have to carry a heavier than normal course load or extend the program beyond two years.
Graduates of the 4-2 Master of Science program may not be eligible to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam if their undergraduate degree is not in engineering or a related field. Students should also check with individual state boards to determine eligibility requirements for employment.
