The Bachelor of Science in Music Education is a 4-year program that leads to Pre K-12 Certification in Music from the New York State Education Department. The degree prepares students for careers as music teachers at the elementary and secondary levels in general, vocal, and instrumental music. Our undergraduate program is unique in that there is a strong focus on Zoltán Kodály’s ideals in all methods classes. Kodály’s vision and philosophy have led to a music education pedagogy that emphasizes music literacy using authentic folk songs, traditional children’s songs and games, classical masterworks, and world music. The methodology evolves from the sequential development of music skills, and is a singing-based curriculum that is underscored by the importance of active music making at the highest levels of musicianship by students of all ages.

The degree requirements are consistent with NASM and NCATE standards as well as the New York State Education Department requirements, and establish Adelphi University as a leading national undergraduate program in Music Education.

In addition to the Music Education requirements below, students must also complete the University’s General Education requirements .

All teacher certification candidates must take and pass the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification which includes the Content Specialty Test in Music.

Please see the full description of the Music Education degree program for more information.
