The Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education and Sport Management offers four (4) distinct programs of study:

  • B.S. Exercise Science
  • B.S. Physical Education and Health Education
  • B.S. Physical Education
  • B.S. Sport Management

The B.S. in Physical Education and the dual certification B.S. in Physical Education and Health Education lead to New York State Teacher Certification. In addition, the department offers non-teaching majors including exercise science with pre-physical therapy and sport management.

Administrative Requirements

In addition to the University’s General Education requirements, students majoring in physical education and seeking New York State Teacher Certification must complete 33-40 credits of Physical Education core courses, 15 credits of Skill-Methodology courses, 18 credit Education core sequence, 10 credits of fieldwork and student teaching and 8 credits in biology. Health certification may be obtained with additional health content courses. Teacher Certification students should achieve minimum grades of C– or better in all professional courses and B- or better in all Education courses.

Exercise Science Program

The Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education and Sport Management offers undergraduate programs which lead to career options in exercise science. Specialized tracks in exercise science include fitness specialization, and pre-physical therapy. In addition to the University’s General Education requirements, students seeking Exercise Science must complete 44 credits of Exercise Science Foundations, including a three credit practicum; 16 credits of Exercise Science electives and 36 additional elective credits. The Exercise Science Program prepares students for careers in strength and conditioning, exercise leadership and personal training. Many students continue on to their Master’s Degree in Exercise Science. Courses include learning objectives for the American College of Sports Medicine, Health/Fitness Specialist Certification. The Pre-Physical Therapy track prepares students who are interested in the application of exercise science for careers in allied health. These careers include, but are not limited to physical therapy, physician’s assistant, nutrition and nursing. This program is designed so the student may fulfill pre-requisite courses necessary for application to professional school programs, while studying exercise science. The course work is similar to the requirements of Exercise Science, with the addition of electives in the basic sciences, math and psychology. Relationship with Physical Therapy programs in conjunction with New York Medical College and New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) are also available.

Joint Degree Program in Physical Therapy
Adelphi University and the New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, offer a combined seven-year B.S./D.P.T. degree program in physical therapy.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Early Decision Program
Adelphi University and the New York Institute of Technology have an affiliation agreement that provides for up to four (4) exceptional AU Exercise Science candidates admission to the NYIT DPT program upon meeting eligibility criteria.

Besides teacher certification programs in health and physical education, the Department of Exercise Science, Health Studies, Physical Education and Sport Management also offers undergraduate programs that do not lead to teacher certification but instead to alternative career options, including Sport Management. Specialized tracks in sport management include sport marketing and business and sport and media with communications. The program of study includes 28 credits in sport management foundation courses, 15 additional credits in sport management electives, 12-24 credits in business and/or communication clusters or concentrations, in addition to 32 credits in general education and 21-37 credits of additional electives as well as a practicum experience to complete the program. It should be noted that continuation in the program and eligibility for practicum and field work experiences require a 2.75 GPA.

Note: Sport Management students must attain a grade of C– or higher to be eligible for continuance, practicum, or enrollment into 500-level courses.

Practicum Experiences
A highlight of the Sport Management program includes placement in a variety of internship or practicum experiences. In order to be eligible for these experiences, students must maintain a minimum of 2.75 GPA and 3.0 in their major.

Minors (18–21 credits)

Students have an opportunity to select minors in health education, sport management, exercise science, or physical education. Each minor requires 18–21 credits in a specific area of study that has been established with the help of an adviser.

Graduate Courses for Undergraduate or Graduate Credit
Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year may take 500- and 600-level courses for undergraduate credit toward their bachelor’s degree with adviser’s approval or, with permission from the program chair, for graduate credit (courses for graduate credit will not count toward bachelor’s degree).
