This program leads to Students with Disabilities (SWD) All Grades and Adolescence 7-12 certification in a content area. The Preservice track is open to candidates who do not hold a NYS teaching certificate. Eligible applicants will have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related subject area and general education requirements.

Preservice Track


(43 Credits)

The goal of this program is to prepare future educators to become New York State certified in one of the four content areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) and in Students with Disabilities (SWD) All Grades. Eligible applicants will have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related subject area and/or meet content core and general education requirements. Applicants will not have prior certification in secondary content or special education.

Courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted. All courses with an * indicate required number of fieldwork hours.

FOUNDATION/LITERACY CORE (18 credits)


All Foundation / Literacy courses must be taken before advancing in the program.

CONTENT SYNTHESIS CORE (19 credits)


STUDENT TEACHING AND REFLECTIVE PRACTICE CORE (6 credits)


Additional Requirements for Program Completion/State Certification


  • Satisfactory completion of Content Core Requirements and General Education courses, including a foreign language
  • Maintenance of 3.0 GPA in all program coursework
  • All teacher certification candidates must take and pass the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification which includes the Content Specialty Test in discipline area
