The dual program in Physical Education M. A. (Professional) with a specialization in Adapted Physical Education and School Health Education Advanced Certificate prepares students to teach children and adolescents in Adapted Physical Education and Health Education in schools. Students are required to have a teacher license in physical education prior to admission.
Teaching Adapted Physical Education prepares teachers as specialists in adapted physical education to serve as leaders in a variety of school-based environments working with students with disabilities. Through their coursework students learn to apply knowledge of the characteristics, considerations, and movement abilities of common impairments to meet the needs, limitations, and capacities of students with disabilities. Within the program is an exciting experiential learning option for students is participating in Camp Abilities Long Island, a developmental sport camp for children who are visually impaired, blind and deaf-blind, teaching them to be physical active and improve their ability to master specific sports, recreational and social activities.
Teacher candidates will also take health education classes concurrently as part of the Advanced Certificate in School Health Education that prepares educators to provide preK-12 health education instruction and intervention. Upon completion of the program the candidates are eligible for New York State Health Education certification.
This dual program is designed for students who are coming from physical education who hold a valid New York State Teacher Certification. These students may have some of the (1) pedagogical core requirements and the (2) health content requirements that are needed to be certified and to meet the prerequisite course requirements. Some students may need to take more prerequisite courses depending on their background and previous course work.
