The M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Adolescent Spanish with Transitional B Certification is a program for candidates who do not currently hold a New York State teaching certification and who want Transitional B certification in both of these areas of study.  This Alternative Certificate program grants the Transitional B license  to career changers or non-certified teachers to teach in shortage areas. After completing required fieldwork in an introductory fieldwork component in an assigned school,  a three–course education component and a passing grade on NYSTCE examinations, the candidate may be employed as a teacher and issued a Transitional B certificate. The candidate will receive mentoring and additional Master degree courses to complete New York State certification requirements while employed in the school.

Upon application to the program, candidates’ undergraduate transcripts will be evaluated for appropriate liberal arts course work required under New York State regulations.  Any deficient course work must be completed before graduation.

When teacher candidates have completed this program, they will be recommended for initial certification in  TESOL grades pre-K-12 and Adolescent Spanish grades 7-12 grade.

Courses are three credits unless noted otherwise. Note: In compliance with  state regulations, this M.A. degree program requires a minimum of 150 hours of fieldwork in schools, a 14 week supervised teaching experience, and a 100 hour TESOL practicum.

Note:

Courses are three credits unless noted otherwise.
