Language Requirement
Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or French. The language proficiency requirement can be met in one of the following ways: a proficiency exam, completion of Levels I thru IV, or Native or heritage speaker status, as determined by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Students are encouraged to take language courses beyond Level IV and consider minoring in Spanish, Portuguese or French.

The curriculum for the Latin American & Latinx Studies major consists of four required courses, courses across five thematic areas, and one elective. The themes guiding student explorations of Latin America and Latinx worlds are: historical processes; literatures & cultures; economy, society & politics; comparative transformations; and methodologies.

The following are required courses (12 credits).
Historical Processes
Choose one course in Historical Processes (3 credits)
Literatures & Cultures
Choose two courses in Literatures & Cultures (6 credits).
STEP/TESOL program students must select TWO language courses from those listed here.
Economy, Society & Politics
Choose one course in Economy, Society & Politics (3 credits).
Comparative Transformations
Choose two courses in Comparative Transformations (6 credits).
Methodologies
Choose one course in Methodologies (3-4 credits) to prepare for writing a culminating research paper on a topic relevant to LAS. Other research or methods seminars are permissible upon approval of the program director and the professor teaching the course.
Electives
Choose one course from any of the above themes. Students may elect an independent study in consultation with the Program Director (3 credits).
