(36 credits)

In the Languages and Cultures major, students will pursue the study of two foreign languages in a 36-credit program that encourages them to discover and to make connections between these languages. With advanced proficiency in one foreign language, gaining skills and cultural competency will enable them to increase career opportunities and enhance their personal lives in an international and intercultural environment while learning a second foreign language to an intermediate level (or beyond, should they choose). A foundational course in intercultural competence provides insights into the effective negotiation of divergent worldviews through the lens of language study. The capstone is an internship where students will deploy this knowledge as well as their language skills. Students also are encouraged to study abroad during their junior year to further develop their language skills in either language. Students will receive advisement about the wide variety of courses offered in other departments that deal with interactions among peoples, cultures, and regions. This program prepares students to enter the workplace in a wide range of possible fields (e.g. business, diplomacy, education, immigration law, international advocacy, nursing / healthcare, social work, translation and interpretation, and travel/tourism).
