An understanding of how creative drama and theatre strategies can enrich language arts instruction and engage adolescent learners is an important component of the Adelphi English Education program. We are now pleased to offer a dual certification track with a specific focus on educational theatre for prospective English teachers with a sufficient background in theatre arts. Applicants for the dual major in English and Theatre must have earned 30 credits in theatre arts in addition to the 30 credits in English already required for admission into the masters program. Students with fewer than 30 credits in theatre arts will be required to take additional course work as part of their program of study. Undergraduate transcripts will be screened for requisite coursework in both English and Theatre Arts upon admission to the program.

The course of study for the dual certification track requires one additional course—Creative Dramatics, Pre-K-6, which increases the single certificate program of study from 37 to 40 credits. Dual certificate candidates must complete an additional 50 hours of fieldwork in theatre arts in a Pre-K-6 and 7-12 setting, housed in two required courses. They must also take and pass the Content Specialty Test in Theatre in addition to the CST in English. Upon graduation, successful applicants will be eligible for two initial New York State teaching certificates—English 7-12 and Theatre Pre-K-12 offering a broad range of exciting and creative teaching possibilities.
