Combined Plan Program in Engineering and Applied Sciences and Mathematics with Columbia University
3/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S.,

4/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S.,

The 3/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S., and 4/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S., are quite similar.  Both the programs admit students to the undergraduate B.S degree at Columbia University. The main difference is that in the 3/2 Program a student opts to go to Columbia after three years of study at Adelphi, whereas in the 4/2 Program a student opts to go to Columbia after four years of study and graduating from Adelphi. The admission requirements are the same for both the programs.

The Columbia University Combined Plan Program enables students to receive both a high quality education in liberal arts from Adelphi University and a world-class engineering education from Columbia University, getting the best of what each educational experience has to offer. Students will receive a B.A. or B.S. degree from Adelphi University as well as a B.S. in one of the disciplines listed below from Columbia University. These programs admit highly promising students who have demonstrated a high level of scholastic accomplishments and interest in pursuing engineering careers.

The program is unique because it enables a student to have quality liberal arts background from Adelphi University and top-quality engineering education from Columbia University. At Adelphi, students get individual and personal attention from faculty. Small classes mean students work closely with faculty (not teaching assistants) that include internationally renowned authors of university textbooks and highly accomplished scientists. A faculty adviser will guide each student in accomplishing his/her academic and professional goals. A student in the Combined Plan Program will be taking at Adelphi during their first three years a) Foundational courses required by Columbia of all engineering majors, b) Major-specific preparatory courses required by Columbia, c) non-technical General Education requirements of Columbia/Adelphi and d) major requirements of Adelphi University. A student in this program will be taking all the engineering major courses at Columbia University for the remaining two years (four semesters).

Most of the combined-plan program students at Adelphi major in the Department of Physics, which offers several major-specific courses required for the Combined Plan Program with Columbia University and will prepare the students to do well at the highly demanding course curriculum at Columbia.  The department has one of the finest undergraduate programs in the country. The department boasts computerized modern instructional laboratories and research facilities that include fully equipped state-of-the-art lasers and modern optics, quantum optics, nonlinear optics, atom trap physics, energy technologies, quantum dots (nanotechnologies), and laser sensor laboratories. A large number of undergraduate students participate in research and present their results at national conferences.

Each student enrolled in the Combined Plan Program is required to first attend Adelphi University for either 3 years or 4 years. The student will then attend Columbia University in the city of New York and attend its Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) for two years.  Applicants should complete all the prerequisite courses, which include the non-technical general education requirements and the major-specific requirements as detailed below.

A student can major in one of the following disciplines :

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Applied Physics
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Engineering and Management Systems
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Operations Research

For guaranteed admission, Adelphi University students seeking admission into the program at SEAS will be required to complete all the prerequisite course requirements as detailed in the Pre-Combined Plan Curriculum Guide available at https://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/apply/combined-plan. A minimum of 3.30 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA), as calculated by SEAS is required for Guaranteed Admission.  However, applicants with a GPA 3.0 to 3.29 cumulative GPA may apply and they may be admitted on an individual basis.

C. The applicants must have been full time students at Adelphi University for at least two years before applying to Columbia. 4-2 students must have graduated from Adelphi University within the past year to be considered for guaranteed admission; any wishing to apply beyond one year after graduation will be considered on an individual basis.

D. Each pre-requisite course must be taken at Adelphi University; courses taken at other institutions or credit awarded by advanced placement may be accepted by SEAS based on the recommendation of the Combined Plan  Program Director at Adelphi and at the discretion of SEAS

E. All applicants are required to demonstrate English proficiency if the native language is not English as detailed at Columbia website

F. Students must have three positive letters of recommendation from Adelphi University: one from the Dual-Degree Engineering Director (Liaison), one from a science professor, and one from a mathematics professor. Both professors need to have taught the student in his/her sophomore year or later.

G. Applicants who do not meet the above criteria may apply and may be admitted on an individual basis.

For Students Enrolled at Adelphi University in Fall 2019 or After

The students should satisfy the following requirements at Adelphi University to be competitive for admission.  Even if an applicant achieves the outlined recommendations, admission to the program is not guaranteed.

A. Applicant must have completed all the prerequisite course requirements at Adelphi.

B. A minimum of 3.30 cumulative GPA as calculated by SEAS, is recommended for admission.  However, applicants with a 3.0 -3.29 cumulative GPA will be considered for admission to the program. In addition, the minimum grade of each pre-engineering science and mathematics prerequisite must be B the first time the course was taken.

C. The applicants must have been full time students at Adelphi University for at least two years before applying to Columbia. 4-2 students must have graduated from Adelphi University within the past year to be considered for admission; any wishing to apply beyond one year after graduation will be considered on an individual basis.

The 4-2 B.S. (Adelphi) M.S (Columbia) Program

The 4-2 Master of Science Program provides the opportunity for students holding bachelor’s degrees from Adelphi University with majors in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or certain other physical sciences to receive the M.S. degree after two years of study at Columbia in the following fields of engineering and applied science: biomedical, chemical, civil, computer science, Earth and environmental, electrical, industrial, and mechanical engineering; applied physics; applied mathematics; engineering mechanics; operations research; and materials science. For more information, please visit https://bulletin.engineering.columbia.edu/4-2-master-science-program.

Each applicant must produce evidence of an outstanding undergraduate record, including superior performance in physics and mathematics through differential equations. The program of study will be individually designed in consultation with a faculty adviser and will integrate undergraduate work with the field of engineering or applied science the student chooses to follow. During the first year, the program will consist primarily of basic undergraduate courses; during the second year, the program will consist of graduate courses in the selected field. The student must complete at least 30 credits of graduate study to qualify for the degree.

A student whose background may require supplementary preparation in some specific area, or who has been out of school for a considerable period, will have to carry a heavier than normal course load or extend the program beyond two years.

Graduates of the 4-2 Master of Science program may not be eligible to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam if their undergraduate degree is not in engineering or a related field. Students should also check with individual state boards to determine eligibility requirements for employment.
