3+2 or 4+2 Combined Plan Program in Engineering and Applied Sciences and Mathematics (Columbia University)

Combined Plan Program in Engineering and Applied Sciences and Mathematics with Columbia University
3/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S.,

4/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S.,

The 3/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S., and 4/2 Combined Plan Program: Adelphi B.A. or B.S./Columbia B.S., are quite similar.  Both the programs admit students to the undergraduate B.S degree at Columbia University. The main difference is that in the 3/2 Program a student opts to go to Columbia after three years of study at Adelphi, whereas in the 4/2 Program a student opts to go to Columbia after four years of study and graduating from Adelphi. The admission requirements are the same for both the programs.

The Columbia University Combined Plan Program enables students to receive both a high quality education in liberal arts from Adelphi University and a world-class engineering education from Columbia University, getting the best of what each educational experience has to offer. Students will receive a B.A. or B.S. degree from Adelphi University as well as a B.S. in one of the disciplines listed below from Columbia University. These programs admit highly promising students who have demonstrated a high level of scholastic accomplishments and interest in pursuing engineering careers.

The program is unique because it enables a student to have quality liberal arts background from Adelphi University and top-quality engineering education from Columbia University. At Adelphi, students get individual and personal attention from faculty. Small classes mean students work closely with faculty (not teaching assistants) that include internationally renowned authors of university textbooks and highly accomplished scientists. A faculty adviser will guide each student in accomplishing his/her academic and professional goals. A student in the Combined Plan Program will be taking at Adelphi during their first three years a) Foundational courses required by Columbia of all engineering majors, b) Major-specific preparatory courses required by Columbia, c) non-technical General Education requirements of Columbia/Adelphi and d) major requirements of Adelphi University. A student in this program will be taking all the engineering major courses at Columbia University for the remaining two years (four semesters).

Most of the combined-plan program students at Adelphi major in the Department of Physics, which offers several major-specific courses required for the Combined Plan Program with Columbia University and will prepare the students to do well at the highly demanding course curriculum at Columbia.  The department has one of the finest undergraduate programs in the country. The department boasts computerized modern instructional laboratories and research facilities that include fully equipped state-of-the-art lasers and modern optics, quantum optics, nonlinear optics, atom trap physics, energy technologies, quantum dots (nanotechnologies), and laser sensor laboratories. A large number of undergraduate students participate in research and present their results at national conferences.

Each student enrolled in the Combined Plan Program is required to first attend Adelphi University for either 3 years or 4 years. The student will then attend Columbia University in the city of New York and attend its Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) for two years.  Applicants should complete all the prerequisite courses, which include the non-technical general education requirements and the major-specific requirements as detailed below.
