Candidate must hold a master’s degree in a related area and a valid New York State Teacher certification to complete the advanced certificate program. Candidate assumes full responsibility for all tuition and fees incurred.

Advanced Certificates in Literacy Education


A candidate must hold a related Master’s degree and a valid NYS teacher certification to be eligible for the Post-Master’s program.

The following courses are required for students seeking a NY State Certification:

  • One course that develops the skills necessary to provide instruction and progress of students with disabilities for students
  • One course in Children’s Literature or Literature for Young Adults
  • One course in the cultural aspects of Literacy

Course selection must be approved by department adviser
Candidates can choose between three programs to obtain certification as a literacy specialist

Additional Requirement for Program Completion/State Certification


  • All teacher certification candidates must take and pass the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification, which includes the Content Specialty Test in Literacy.
