The Physical Education and Health Education Teacher Certification program is a dual certification program. It prepares students for New York State Teacher Certification for both Physical Education and Health Education at Pre-K to 12 grades. The program provides students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to develop a program/curriculum and teach and promote fitness and wellness in schools.

General Education

All students must satisfy the University’s General Education requirements , in addition to the requirements for the major. Students completing the B.A. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must also satisfy the University’s foreign language requirement. There is no University requirement for a foreign language for the B.A. degree awarded by other schools of the University or for other bachelor’s degrees such as the B.S. or B.F.A.

Major students must attain a grade of C- or higher in all PED and HED major courses to be eligible for continuance, practicum, or enrollment into 500-level courses.
Juniors may take 500 level courses only. Seniors may take 500 or 600 level courses upon adviser’s approval.
Students who graduate with more than 120 credits may apply up to 9 credits of Health Education courses numbered 500 or above to the M.A. in Health Education. This may be done only if those Health Education courses were taken for graduate credit, which means that the courses do not apply to the undergraduate degree. As this may affect financial aid status, consult with an adviser.
Students may take 6 credits in a language other than English or 3 credits at Level III or higher to meet New York State Teacher Certification requirements, unless waived by documented passing scores on high school Regents Examination in a language or documented fluency in a language.
The following New York State certification requirements workshops can be met by physical eduation and health education courses as indicated:
- Child Abuse Identification only–HED 601 and HED 702
- Child Abuse & Violence Prevention–HED 371 , HED 504 , HED 571 , HED 607 , and HED 610
- Violence Prevention only–PED 550 (S/T Leadership Development: Violence)
- Dignity for All Students Acts–HED 507

Students who wish to be certified in BOTH Physical Education and Health Education require ADDITIONAL credits to the above. *Students who graduate with more than 120 credits may apply up to 9 credits of Health courses numbered 500 and above to the M.A. in Health Education. This may only be done if those Health courses are designated as floating credits while they are undergraduate students. ¹Any class in Literacy Methods is acceptable.
