3+4 Pathway PROGRAM with New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) College of Osteopathic Medicine


Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Biology from Adelphi University/ Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) College of Osteopathic Medicine


New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) College of Osteopathic Medicine, begun in 1977 is committed to training osteopathic physicians for a lifetime of learning and practice, based upon the integration of evidence-based knowledge, critical thinking, and the tenets of osteopathic principles and practice.  The school is also committed to preparing osteopathic physicians for careers in health care, including that in the inner city and rural communities, as well as to the scholarly pursuit of new knowledge concerning health and disease. The purpose of the Program is to provide a pathway for exceptional candidates with outstanding college records and correspondingly high MCAT scores to shorten their undergraduate experience by a year and attend NYIT COM   either in Old Westbury, New York or in Jonesboro, Arkansas.


After successful completion of the first year in the D.O. program, Adelphi University will accept graduate credits taken at NYITCOM for the completion of the undergraduate Biology degree. Upon successful completion of the D.O. program, NYIT will grant the student a D.O. degree. 


There will be up to five (5) students accepted by Adelphi into the program each year. 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PATHWAY PROGRAM


Entering Freshman:
Applicants for the program must apply to Adelphi and indicate their interest in the 3+4 Pathway program with NYIT COM

A combined SAT score of at least 1200 or ACT composite score of at least 25
A high school grade point average of at least 90%
Admission to the Pathway is not an admission to NYITCOM.
Complete an interview at Adelphi no later than March of the senior year of high school.

For NYIT COM to consider Adelphi College students in their third year at Adelphi for admission to the D.O. program, the Pathway student must:
Earn an overall science grade point average of 3.5 each semester with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. 
Declare their intention to apply for admission at NYITCOM – Jonesboro, Arkansas
or NYITCOM – Long Island, New York by the end of their second year. 

Take the MCAT between August and January of the junior year of college and score at least equal to the mean MCAT at the applicable NYITCOM campus determined the year the student began undergraduate school.

Complete a minimum of 8 hours of biology (course/lab), 8 hours each of inorganic
and organic chemistry (course/lab), 8 hours of physics (course/lab), and 6 hours of
English, with no grade below C in any of these courses or labs. Students are
encouraged to enroll in additional courses such as calculus, anatomy, genetics,
physical chemistry, biochemistry, behavioral sciences and neurosciences. All required courses plus others for total of 90 credits must be taken at Adelphi. 

Obtain a favorable recommendation from the Adelphi Premedical Council. 
Pass a personal interview conducted by NYITCOM faculty.
