Program Description
The department offers a 33 or 36 credit program providing advanced study for teachers and other physical activity professionals related to careers in physical education, sport, and physical activity leading to an M.A degree in Physical Activity Studies. The individually designed program draws from coursework in Health, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Sport Management, other electives with permission, or students may choose an optional Specialization: 1) Teaching Adapted Physical Education, or 2) Sport-Based Youth Development, 3) School District Leadership in Administration of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics.
Note: Students may be able to transfer up to 6 credits of non-Adelphi graduate level courses and up to 9 credits of graduate level Adelphi courses to the program upon adviser’s approval.

Required Foundation Courses MA in Physical Activity Studies (9 Credits):

MA in Physical Activity Studies Options (24 or 27 credits)
Choice of courses is determined by the following options:
Option 1: Students who choose an MA Physical Activity Studies degree without a specialization needs 24 elective credits.
Option 2: Students who choose a specialization in Teaching Adapted Physical Education needs 18 Core credits and 9 elective credits.
Option 3: Students who choose a specialization in Sport-Based Youth Development needs 9 Core credits and 15 elective credits.
Option 4: Students who choose a specialization in School District Leadership in Administration of Physical Education, Health and Athletics need 15 core and 9 elective credits.
Option 1: MA Physical Activity Studies without a Specialization (24 Elective Credits)
500 level courses and above in Physical Education, Sport Management, Exercise Science, Health Education and other disciplines as approved by program advisement only.* The choices of courses are too extensive to list.

Option 4: School District Leadership in Administration of Physical Education, Health and Athletics (24 credits)
The School District Leader (SDL) in Administration of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics program leads to New York State certification and licensure for school district leader positions, such as district superintendent, director of pupil personal services, district technology director and additional district supervisory positions. This specialization focuses on administration in physical activity settings although you will be certified in the other areas. The SDL program is designed to bring a multidisciplinary focus and broad perspective to district administrative functions, such as: supervision, leadership development, district governance, financial management of district resources (i.e., human, facilities information and budgetary), curriculum innovation and technological initiatives.
The specialization will employ a Hybrid/Blended Course Model: meeting half-time in class and half-time over the internet. This master’s degree with a specialization in Administration in Physical Education, Health, and Athletics meets the programmatic requirements for the New York State School District License (SDL). New York State requires satisfaction of the NYS SDL assessments, and completion of 60 graduate credits (which may include credits as part of this program) before the SDL Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies can be conferred by Adelphi University’s College of Education and Health Sciences.
Note:
Documentation of a minimum of three years full-time work in classroom teaching, pupil personnel service, and/or administrative experience in a PreK-12 public or NYS approved private school is required for entrance and to take the specialization core classes. Valid NYS certification is documented employment area is required for all positions in public schools. Employment in public schools must be in a non-civil service position. Documentation of satisfaction of NYS mandated workshops in Child Abuse identification and School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE) are required for graduation.
