The Scholar Teacher Education Program (STEP) is a unique, five-year, combined bachelor’s/master’s program for undergraduate students preparing to teach at the childhood and adolescent grade levels. The continuity and cohesiveness of the undergraduate and graduate aspects of the program make the curriculum both economical and comprehensive.
The structure of STEP is particularly effective in meeting the needs of the transfer student. Most students entering the program at the junior level have a three-year course of study, which takes them through their master’s degree in education; other students who major in one of the natural sciences or math may take longer. These students should consult with the appropriate academic adviser prior to enrollment to see exactly how long it will take to meet all requirements.
|
Admissions Requirements
- Freshmen: minimum 3.0 high school GPA; SAT of 1090 or higher
- Transfer students: minimum 2.75 GPA
New York State Requirements - Foreign Language
For teacher certification, the State of New York requires 3 credits of a language (any level) other than English including American Sign Language, a passing score on the NY State Regents Foreign Language Examination or Checkpoint B exam.
* These requirements can be waived with a passing score on High School Regents Exam or with a passing score on the Foreign Language Association of Chairpersons and Supervisors (FLACS) exam.
College of Arts and Sciences Foreign Language Requirements
Additional foreign language requirements may be necessary for students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students admitted to STEP must consult with the liberal arts advisor. General Education
All students must satisfy the University’s General Education requirements , in addition to the requirements for the major. Students completing the B.A. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences must also satisfy the University’s foreign language requirement. There is no University requirement for a foreign language for the B.A. degree awarded by other schools of the University or for other bachelor’s degrees such as the B.S. or B.F.A.
