This program leads to certification in both early childhood and students with disabilities birth through grade 2. It is intended for candidates who do not hold New York State Teacher Certification in any area.

Program Prerequisites: ECH (0807) 600 Child Development  or the undergraduate equivalent within previous 5 years, with a grade of B or better.

Courses are three credits unless noted otherwise.

Early Childhood Special Education Foundations


(12 credits)

May be taken after (preferred) or concurrently with EYC (0814) Foundations courses.

Early Childhood Special Education Advanced Sequence


(12 credits)

All ECS (0820) Foundations courses should be completed prior to enrolling in the courses listed below.

Student Teaching in Early Childhood Special Education


(6 credits)

ECS (0820) 840  and ECS (0820) 850  Student Teaching I and II in Early Childhood Special Education and Clinical Seminar (3 credits each, 6 credits total)

Additional Requirements for Program Completion/State Certification


  • Satisfactory completion of Content Core Requirements and General Education courses, including a foreign language
  • Maintenance of 3.0 GPA in all program coursework
  • All teacher certification candidates must take and pass the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification which includes the Content Specialty Test in Multisubject and Students with Disabilities
