Faculty

Environmental Studies and Sciences places science and technology into a cultural and social context to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, sustainability, loss of biodiversity, marine pollution, toxins in our environment, and energy conservation. Our students have the opportunity to weave scientific knowledge gained in our environmental, marine and other earth science courses, as well as from biology, chemistry, or physics, with problems and solutions encountered in policy, anthropology, philosophy, and many other courses. Many of our courses are focused on local field sites in the South Shore Estuary, and we offer field experiences in Australia, Alaska, and on Long Island. Our students gain valuable vocational experience through internships and are well served by our strong alumni network.

Transfer Students

Transfer students at any level are accepted into one of degree tracks in the Environmental Studies and Sciences program. The number of credits and courses that are transferable will be determined on an individual basis. Students transferring from an accredited four-year college must spend at least two semesters in residence at the University working toward a degree. Community college students must complete two years in residence working toward one of our degrees.

Options

Environmental Studies and Sciences degree programs have been designed for maximum interdisciplinary options and flexibility so that students can pursue any number of different course combinations pertaining to the physical and social environments.

STEP Students and Earth Sciences

Students interested in secondary education certification for the earth sciences should register for our courses under the Earth Sciences listing and EAS (0112) designation.

STEP students should consult with an earth sciences adviser, taking 30 credits in earth science subject matters, 8 credits of which must be from the following courses:

• EAS (0112) 102 - Physical Geology  (4 credits)
• EAS (0112) 103 - Historical Geology  (4 credits)

Emergency Management Program

Qualified Environmental Studies Program seniors may take selected courses in the Emergency Management Program toward their degree requirements. Students should refer to the Emergency Management Program description in University College and consult with their adviser.

Honors in Environmental Studies and Sciences

The standards for Departmental Honors are determined by the faculty and completion of an Environmental Studies and Sciences degree with strong GPA and experiential learning experiences.
