School of Health and Sport Sciences offers the following graduate programs of study:

  • M.A. Community Health Promotion
  • M.A. Health Education1
  • M.A. Physical Education2
  • M.S. Exercise Science
  • M.S. Sport Management

Students enrolled in the graduate programs in Physical Education have the opportunity to choose a specialization in the following areas:

  • Adapted Physical Education
  • Sport-Based Youth Development

Students enrolled in the graduate programs in Sport Management have the option to specialize in:

  • Collegiate Athletic Administration (pending program approval)
  • Sport Marketing (pending program approval)
  • Sport Based Youth Development

In addition, the department also offers the following Advanced Certificate Programs

  • Community Health Promotion
  • Health Education

1The M.A. in Health Education program leads to New York State Teacher Certification.

2The M.A. in Physical Education program offers two plans of study: one that leads to New York State Teacher Certification and another for students interested in physical activity related careers beyond the school setting that does not lead to Teacher Certification.  

Program Requirements

Graduate students in the department must attain a grade of C- or higher in all major courses and the required cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be eligible for continuance, practicum and completion of the program.

New York State Teacher Certification Requirements

Teacher Certification students must pass the New York State Teacher Certification Exams (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification. In addition, they must demonstrate satisfactory completion of content core requirements, general education courses, including a foreign language and all mandatory workshops.

Exercise Science Program

The program prepares students to work with a variety of populations including high level and recreational athletes as well as people who are diagnosed with cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, orthopedic and metabolic problems. Graduates of the program pursue careers in clinical exercise physiology, cardiac and medical rehabilitation, personal training and strength conditioning and sports medicine.

The program is 36 credits and includes 15 credits of exercise science core, 18 credits of exercise science electives and 3 credits of internship.

Community Health Promotion Program

The Community Health Promotion Program prepares students to promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health in a variety of public, private, and professional settings.  Students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam.

Students interested in Health Promotion and Public Health may be eligible to earn two Masters Degrees.  Community Health Promotion graduates can add an Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, with additional 15-21 credits upon advisers’ approval.

The department offers two programs:

  • M.A. Community Health Promotion
  • Advanced Certificate in Community Health Promotion

The M.A. program is 37 credits that include 21 credits of Community Health Promotion core, 12 credits of electives and 4 credits of Internship.

The Advanced Certificate program is 19-28 credits that include 12 credits of Community Health Promotion core, 12 credits of electives and 4 credits of Internship. A student can be waived up to 9 credits depending on previous work and upon adviser approval.

Health Education Program

The Health Education Program prepares students to teach health in schools. Three plans of study are offered:

  • M.A. Health Education that leads to New York State initial/professional teacher certification. This is also called the Graduate Alternative Teacher Education (GATE) program for Health Education
  • M.A. Health Education that leads only to New York State professional teacher  certification in Health
  • Advanced Certificate in Health Education that leads to New York State initial teacher certification.

The Graduate Alternative Teacher Education (GATE) Program plan of study is offered for students without New York State teacher certification and for those who hold a valid New York State teacher certification in other content areas (Physical Education, English, Math, Special Education, etc.) The program is 37-52 credits that includes 28-34 credits of health education core (including 1 credit of fieldwork), a minimum of 9 credits of electives and additional health  and education courses as determined by advisement depending on previous coursework.

The MA Health Education program plan of study is offered to those who hold a valid initial/provisional New York State teacher certification in Health only. The program is 36 credits that include 27 credits of health education core and 9 credits of electives.

The Advanced Certification in Health Education is offered for students in Physical Education and other health related areas who hold a valid New York State teacher certification. The program is 19 credits that include 12 credits of health education core and 1 credit of fieldwork. In addition, 12 credits of pedagogical education courses and 11 credits of health education content courses are required as pre-requisites.

Physical Education Program

The Physical Education program prepares students to teach physical education in schools and other venues in the community. The department offers two programs:

  • M.A. in Physical Education: Teaching that leads to New York State teacher certification (GATE Program)
  • M.A. in Physical Education: Non-Teaching that does not lead to New York State  teacher certification

The Physical Education program that leads to New York State teacher certification offers a plan of study that provides an alternative track for both initial and professional certification. It is offered for:

  • students without New York State teacher certification
  • students with initial New York State teacher certification in other content areas (English, Math, Special Education, etc.) other than Physical Education

The program is 33-66 credits that include 0-15 credits of physical education co-requisites, 33 credits of physical education core and 16-18 credits of pedagogical core. This is also called the Graduate Alternative Teacher Education (GATE) Program for Physical Education.

The M.A. in Physical Education that does not lead to New York State Teacher Certification is offered for students interested in physical activity related careers beyond the school setting. Students may have the option to specialize in Adapted Physical Education, Health and Physical Education and Sport Based Youth Development. The program is 33 credits that include 18 credits in physical education core (including 3 credits of internship or practicum) and 15 credits of courses in a chosen specialization as determined through advisement.

Sport Management Program

The Sport Management program prepares students for a variety of professional careers in the sport industry. Our curriculum introduces students to contemporary sport industry management strategies and marketing concepts. Communication and leadership skill development are also included to ensure our graduates have the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in a chosen career path. Sport management graduates are equipped to work with sports teams, sport marketing agencies, intercollegiate sports, sport product manufacturing companies, as well as sports events and facilities. Specializations are offered within the program to prepare students for desired sport management careers. Students can choose from the following specializations: sport marketing, collegiate athletic administration and sport-based youth development.

The program is 36 credits that include 6 credits of foundation courses, 12 credits of sport management core, 15 credits of specialization courses and 3 credits of capstone or internship.
