A specialized plan of study may be developed for students who are interested in proceeding to careers in allied health, which may include, but is not limited to physical therapy, medicine (physician or physician assistant), nutrition and nursing. This plan of study is designed in conjunction with an adviser so that students may fulfill pre-requisite courses necessary for application to professional school programs while studying exercise science.
The program is 120 credits that include general education, 41 credits of Exercise Science core courses, 3 credit of Practicum and 19 credits of Exercise Science electives in the areas of Community Health Promotion, Health Education, Physical Education and Sport Management. Students interested in proceeding to allied health professions like physical therapy, physical assistantship and others should complete basic sciences and other pre-requisite courses as university electives. These courses may include the following: 2 semesters of biology, chemistry and physics that include both lectures and labs, 2 courses in psychology and specific math requirements. Students should check the professional programs of interest and work with their adviser.
The Exercise Science program participates in the following academic relationships and programs:
- Joint Degree Program in Physical Therapy. Adelphi University and the New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, offer a combined seven-year B.S./D.P.T. degree program in physical therapy.
- Doctor of Physical Therapy ( DPT) Early Decision Program. Adelphi University and the New York Institute of Technology have an affiliation agreement that provides for up to four (4) exceptional Adelphi Exercise Science graduates to be awarded early admission to the NYIT DPT program upon meeting eligibility criteria.
