Peace Studies is a minor that gives undergraduate students the opportunity to explore and discover peaceful alternatives to various forms of violence. The minor provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complex nature of human rights, peace, and peace-building work as well as hands-on experience to encourage students to engage in informed peace work. In addition to core courses, students choose among 5 strands, which include human rights, social justice and diversity, global justice, eco-justice, and conflict resolution. The overall focus on social justice and human rights complements Adelphi University’s existing strengths in international studies, the Levermore Global Scholars Program, and work with the United Nations.
The Peace Studies Minor opens up a variety of employment opportunities to graduates: international non-governmental organizations, local community-based organizations, and grassroots organizations, the United Nations system, government (state department, congressional staff, etc.), civil rights law, human rights law, environmental law, university international student services and programs, social work, non-profit sector jobs, advertising, and teaching among others.
