Sociology is the systematic study of the organization and condition of society. Using both empirical and conceptual tools, our Department engages students in the analysis of social forces, the workings of social institutions, and the behavior of social groups. We work to foster students’ ability to uncover the underlying patterns that make social phenomena meaningful by drawing upon social theory and research methods.

Our goal is for students to understand the emergence of social structures, their reproduction and ways that social movements reshape patterns of inequality. Students develop an understanding of the social contexts that provide the framework for social patterns locally and globally, historically and currently, and the ways that the agency of ordinary people can and does bring about social change. The student sociologist learns to observe, measure, report, analyze and draw conclusions about human social behavior in all its complexity.

A major in sociology is solid preparation not only for graduate study in the field but for careers such as in teaching, advertising, law, public health, environmental safety, medicine and administration. In both the public and private sectors, sociologists are called upon to collect data, analyze results, and generate new knowledge. Sociologists play a leadership role in many non-profit organizations, focused on a range of social issues.

The Sociology Department also offers the criminal justice major in conjunction with the University College program.
