A bachelor’s in exercise science, health studies, physical education or sport management is recommended for admission to candidacy to the exercise science, health studies, physical education and sport management program but is not required. When candidates have a degree in another area, they may apply to the Health or Physical Education GATE Program to complete the M.A. degree with Teacher Certification.
Twelve credits in professional education, literacy, special education, language and fieldwork, are required in addition to student teaching for those seeking New York State Certification. The passing of all state tests is required for New York State Teacher Certification.

The Health Studies Program offers programs to prepare health educators in schools and the community:
- MA Health Education (PreK-12)
- MA Community Health Promotion
Master of Arts (M.A.) in Health Education (Pre K-12)
Candidates for the Master of Arts in Health Education should have an undergraduate background in health or health-related areas. When candidates have degrees in other areas they may be required as part of the program to complete course work in addition to the requirements of the graduate program: human biology (anatomy and physiology), health-related courses, and education courses.
There are two plans of study offered:
- The GATE Program in Health Education is open to students without NYS certification in health education.
- The Master’s of Art in Health Education is open to students who already hold a valid initial/provisional NYS teacher certification in health education

The Department offers a Master of Arts in Physical Education in four tracks:
- For students who hold a valid NYS Certification in any area
- For students who do not hold a valid NYS Teachers Certification
- For students who hold a valid NYS Certification in Physical Education and would like to specialize in Adapted Physical Education
- For Students who wish to major in Physical Education without NYS teacher
