ENG (0122) 335 - The Literature of Youth


Credits: 3.00

Students will study the legacy and evolution of the fairy tale genre, starting from the Enlightenment through industrialization to its contemporary context of urban technology.  Students will examine how each historical moment both evolved and maintained the genre’s original tropes.

Prerequisite 1: ENG 250  ENG 221  
Students will be able to:

• analyze and utilize the different elements of children’s literature both critically and creatively

● use resources of children’s literature in libraries, databases, and on the internet 

● discuss and write persuasively about some of the main topics in children’s literature, such as the representation of gender, generation, ethnicity, and nature

● discuss the evolution of fairy tales, once they pass through the introduction of Christianity, Industrialization, Urbanization, and Digitalization.

● generate ideas to use children’s literature purposefully and effectively in their own pedagogy and/or creative writing.
