ENG (0122) 645 - Children’s Literature Workshop


Credits: 3.00

Students will engage in the craft of creating written narratives for young readers.  Through close analysis of picture books, fairy tales, and Middle-grade and Young Adult literature, and through written exercises that emulate each form, students will develop a portfolio of short works for readers ages 5-16.

Students will be able to:

• analyze and utilize the different elements of children’s literature both critically and creatively

● write picture books for young readers and short stories for Middle-grade and Young Adult readers

● discuss some of the main topics in children’s literature, such as the representation of gender, generation, ethnicity, and nature, through the writing of original short narrative works

● develop a personal methodology for creating and revising short narrative works for young audiences.
