ABC (0101) 110 - Introduction to African American and African Diaspora Studies


Credits: 3.00

Students will explore the discipline of African American and African Diaspora Studies, with a focus on the experiences of African-descended peoples across the globe. As an interdisciplinary course, it draws from literature, film, art, history, and religion to examine the diverse and complex realities of Black communities.

Repeatable: No Grade Type: Regular or Pass/Fail
Course Learning Goals: By the end of the course students will be able to:

- identify major themes and historical frameworks in the field of African American and African Diaspora Studies, both past and present; 

- assess and understand the relevance of African American and African Diaspora Studies both historically and in our contemporary moment; 

- describe the interconnectivity of race, gender, and class; and, 

- have an improved ability to think critically and analytically about race. 

- have an appreciation for comparative, disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to issues in the Black experience, and develop an introductory analysis of the historical, sociological, and cultural contexts of contemporary problems relating to racism.
