Students examine the nature of historical knowledge and issues of meaning in history. Students confront the possible consequences of viewing history as either continuous, progressive, or fragmented for historical knowledge as well as for politics. Philosophers studied may include: Hegel, Marx, Vico, Nietzsche, Collingwood, Foucault, and Walter Benjamin.
