ABC (0101) 290 - Race: A Critical Perspective


Credits: 3.00

Students will review the origins of race as a concept and its historical construction. Students examine how race has been used socially and politically to: create categories of inclusion and exclusion; influence the cognition, affect, and behavior of individuals and groups; and shape ideas of social justice and equality.

Course Learning Goals: By the end of the semester, students will:

  1. be able to explain how different disciplines have constructed ideas about race
  2. be able to explain how race operates within historical, cultural, social, and political contexts
  3. have a greater awareness of how sociocultural, economic, and political forces shape the behavior of individuals, groups, and institutions
  4. have a greater awareness of their own values, beliefs, assumptions, and experiences
  5. be more aware of factors that influence the development and worldview of others
  6. be able to explain the effects of oppression and privilege
