This course focuses on the pharmacotherapeutic use of medications for primary health care management by advanced nurse practitioners. Emphasis is placed on the critical thinking process used to prescribe drugs in the management of illnesses. Core concepts include pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics across the lifespan, health related information and medication compliance.

Prerequisite 1: NUR 602  and NUR 704
Corequisite: NUR 756

Repeatable: No Grade Type: Regular
Course Learning Goals: 1. Demonstrate proper techniques for advanced nurse practitioner prescription writing and verbal transmission according to current Federal and New York State laws and regulations.

2. Analyze the relationship between pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to effectively predict a drug’s effect on overall physiologic response with lifespan considerations.

3. Classify and differentiate the general indications and mechanisms of action of various pharmacological agents.

4. Interpret the concepts and potential for drug-drug interactions and adverse drug reactions.

5. Describe and discuss principles of pharmacotherapeutics for use in the management of specific acute and chronic disease states across the lifespan.

6. Apply critical thinking, research data, nursing informatics, and other resources to describe the pharmacotherapeutic management of primary health care methods.

7. Develop a body of advanced nursing pharmacological knowledge enabling one to manage the primary health care of selected patients.

8. Design an individualized lifespan appropriate pharmacologic treatment plan for a given patient with specific disease state(s) based on the most current evidence based treatment guidelines.

9. Display clinical skills necessary for self-directed lifelong learning in order to improve therapeutic outcomes in patient and public health.

10. Discuss New York State mandatory prescribing education regarding pain management, palliative care and addiction.
