ABC (0101) 130 - African American Dance


Credits: 3.00

Students will understand and trace the historical/cultural perspectives of African dance to today’s contemporary dance forms. This course introduces some of the complex rhythms and varieties of African dance. Some pioneering contributors to African American dance will also be examined.

Course Learning Goals: Focusing on the origins of traditional African dance movements and their development into contemporary styles, students will discover the background and history of African Americans’ contributions to dance in America. Students will develop cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, coordinating body alignment and muscle tone while practicing African dance techniques/ styles daily.
