EDU (0801) 498 - Service Learning Program in Kenya

Students will travel to Kenya for a service-learning project at The Caroline school and home. This project will combine specific learning objectives and activities to better the overall conditions of its members.  

Repeatable: Yes Grade Type: Pass/Fail
Free Note: Instructor permission to register is required.  Open to all majors and all programs.

Course Learning Goals:
  • To describe the role of a school/home community for orphan children.  
  • To summarize aspects of the culture, politics, social issues, geography, and life in Kenya.
  • To illustrate how children learn in a school/home community.
  • To explain teacher and staff behaviors that influence how children learn in the school/home.
  • To design and implement a service-learning project to better the conditions, interactions, education, facilities, and life of a school /home in Wangige, Kenya.
  • To evaluate the civic, moral, and ethical implications of the service-learning projects in the life of the teachers and children in the school/home.
  • To analyze the impact of this service-based experience on students’ professional and personal growth.
