This course strives to enhance self-awareness related to professional identity,  to engage in a critical analysis of the social work profession through a social justice lens and to strengthen development of one’s curriculum vitae, prepare for professional conferences, develop grant proposals and prepare a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Course Learning Goals: Students who successfully complete this course will develop skills and strategies, grounded in social justice framework, pertaining to the following dimensions of professional involvement:

  • Strengthening personal identity as a leader in the field of social work
  • Understanding the importance of mentorship
  • Developing a research agenda
  • How to navigate the conference proposal, acceptance, poster development and presentation process
  • Seeking external funding and developing a framework for grant-writing
  • Developing and preparing a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Career and time management.
