ABC (0101) 290 - Race: A Critical Perspective Credits: 3.00
Students will review the origins of race as a concept and its historical construction. Students examine how race has been used socially and politically to: create categories of inclusion and exclusion; influence the cognition, affect, and behavior of individuals and groups; and shape ideas of social justice and equality.
Repeatable: No Grade Type: Regular Course Learning Goals: By the end of the semester, students will:
- be able to explain how different disciplines have constructed ideas about race
- be able to explain how race operates within historical, cultural, social, and political contexts
- have a greater awareness of how sociocultural, economic, and political forces shape the behavior of individuals, groups, and institutions
- have a greater awareness of their own values, beliefs, assumptions, and experiences
- be more aware of factors that influence the development and worldview of others
- be able to explain the effects of oppression and privilege
