SPE (0876) 354 - Communication Disorders In Children


Credits: 3.00

The student will be provided with an overview of communication in children. Topics include speech sound disorders, dysphagia, motor speech impairments, fluency, language impairments, literacy, and autism spectrum disorders.  The nature of assessment and intervention, including multicultural considerations will be discussed within the framework of evidence based practice.

Prerequisite 1: SPE 144 
Course Learning Goals: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1) Describe speech and language disorders caused by organic/neurogenic pathologies, a foundation upon which to build with clinical experience and graduate study. 

2) Explain cursory information about assessment and therapy for organically-based communication disorders. 

3) Demonstrate compassion for people who are living with organically based communication problems.
