Credits: 3.00

This course will give students experience in empirical methods for the study of speech, language, and hearing, and cover issues of research design and data analysis.  Students will gain experience with multiple research designs and forms of data analysis for studying language, speech, and hearing.

Prerequisite 1: SPE 144  and SPE 210  and SPE 201
● Students will be able to develop acoustic materials for use in studies of hearing and speech perception, and organize them for listener presentation via software

● Students will organize,  plot data, and carry out simple statistical procedures

● Students will identify appropriate statistical methods for a small set of study types, and interpret output from those methods

● Students will describe the sections of a research article, and how they relate to steps of the scientific method

● Students will identify threats to validity in study designs implemented in class

● Students will conduct a small-scale study of their own design: Develop a research question based on previous literature, collect relevant data, and write up the results according to standard journal article format.
