European philosophy had a dramatic rebirth in the 17th Century, as thinkers attempted to make sense of modernity as experienced in the growth of commerce, exploration, and scientific knowledge. What could be known? Could science and religion co-exist? Philosophers read include: René Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Baruch Spinoza.
