Electronic medical records and exchange of patient information and patient privacy mandates have created an increased demand for health care information technology (IT) professionals. The intent of this program is to prepare graduates for careers in health and medical informatics in academic, health care (e.g. hospital) or industrial settings. The curriculum was developed from the model curriculum of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and was developed to also align with the criteria of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Information and Information Management (CAHIIM). It is designed to help the student use information technology to support efficient, accurate health care delivery and management. People who choose this specialization are often IT professionals pursuing health information management or healthcare professionals pursuing information technology specializations.
