The College of Professional and Continuing Studies General Education and Core Requirements
The College of Professional and Continuing Studies students must meet the requirement of four core courses and six distribution courses, as described here.
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Social Science
The Bachelor of Arts in Social Science focuses on guiding students to develop their cognitive skills, including critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, and decision making. The majority of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies social science majors continue their studies in graduate programs in one of the following areas: psychology, school psychology, counseling, elementary or secondary education, public administration, law, and social work.
Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Social Science: Social Cultural Studies Concentration
Required GPA: 2.0
Major GPA: 2.5
Credits Required for Major: 40
Credits Required to Graduate: 120 Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Literature or Social Sciences
Candidates for these degrees must have completed at least 120 credits, 90 of which must be in the liberal arts. 40 credits are required for this major. The final 30 credits must be taken in graded course work at the University, and no more than 60 of total credits may be awarded from prior learning. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in their area of concentration and a minimum GPA of 2.0 from Adelphi overall.
Requirements for the B.A. in Literature or Social Science:
The distribution requirement for the Bachelor of Arts will be fulfilled as follows:
- Three foundation courses in the appropriate area of concentration.
- A minimum of 16 credits of advanced electives in the appropriate area of concentration or specialization.
- Capstone I and II
The College of Professional and Continuing Studies Bachelor Degree Capstone Courses
The College of Professional and Continuing Studies bachelor’s degree programs (excepting the B.S. in Business, the B.S. in Criminal Justice, and the B.A. in Psychology), are completed by taking a sequence of two 4-credit capstone courses:
The Baccalaureate Capstone is an interdisciplinary seminar that examines how the ideas of the modern age have challenged and altered traditional ways of thinking. As an analysis of the seminal ideas of modernity as defined by the thinkers who originated them, the Baccalaureate Capstone will empower students to think about the world in new and exciting ways.
