The specialization in sport-based youth development utilizes innovative teaching, coaching and administrative approaches to prepare students to work with young people outside of the traditional physical education and interscholastic/intercollegiate sport settings. The specialization is an alternative program to teacher education, as well as an extension for coaches, recreation leaders, teachers, administrators, youth development workers and others who have an interest in the holistic development of youth through sport and physical activity.

The specialization can be completed only as part of a master’s degree, either the M.A. in Physical Education or the M.S. in Sport Management. Extra credits are not required to complete the specialization, as the required courses to completed the specialization are embedded in the coursework for the M.A. in Physical Education or the M.S. in Sport Management.
