Students in the joint MPH and MS in Applied Mathematics and Data Science will be prepared to take on leadership roles in creating and overseeing programs and policies that promote the ideals of public health with a special emphasis on statistical knowledge and skills. This timely degree will prepare graduates to take on key roles in public health organizations as an epidemiologist, manager, researcher, educator, advocate, director or biostatistician. In addition, students will be able to work in industry in positions involving scientific computing, optimization, or as statistical consultants.

Students applying to this program must meet the admissions requirements of both the MPH and the MS in Applied Mathematics and Data Science. 

This joint program would allow students to count 9 credits of MPH courses as electives for the MS degree and to count 6 credits of MS courses as electives for the MPH. The two degrees could be completed in three years. 

MPH Electives:


  • (3 courses, 9 credits)
  • MTH (0144) 560 - Regression Analysis   Credits: 3.00
  • MTH elective chosen in consultation with advisor Credits: 3.00
  •  One of the following:
    • PUB 608  - Advanced Epidemiology Credits: 3.00 or
    • Any course that covers an introduction to SAS Programming and Data Analysis Credits: 3.00
    • Any course that covers design of epi studies and clinical trials Credit: 3.00
