NY State Program Code: 35810
HEGIS Code: 0809.00

(6 credits)

The advanced certificate in Middle School Education examines the complex, rich, perplexing (but never boring) life of an adolescent.  Candidates in this program will gain a deeper understanding of how their content area can speak to the needs of the middle school student.  Completion of this six credit, hybrid (partially online) program enables qualified childhood educators to extend their certificate up to grades 7-9 in one content area and adolescent educators to extend their certificate down to grades 5-6 in the content area of their certificate.  Content area include: Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Mathematics, Physics, Foreign Language, History, (social studies), and General Studies (18 credits in two additional science areas beyond initial science specialty).  Initial certification in childhood or adolescence education with at least thirty credits completed in one content area is required for admission.
