The required and elective courses listed above are for students seeking initial/professional certification in physical education. Each student will be reviewed as to his or her experience and course work. Where a student has a comparable course at the undergraduate level, he or she will be waived from that requirement and allowed to take additional electives at the advanced level in physical education or in related fields, such as exercise science, sports management, adapted physical education, or health education.

Optional Specialization in Sport-Based Youth Development


The specialization in sport-based youth development utilizes innovative teaching, coaching and administrative approaches to prepare you for working with young people outside of the traditional physical education and interscholastic/intercollegiate sport settings. The specialization is intended as an alternative program to teacher education, as well as an extension for coaches, recreation leaders, teachers, administrators, youth development workers and others who have an interest in the holistic development of youth through sport and physical activity.

The specialization can be completed only as part of a master’s degree, either the M.A. in Physical Education or the M.S. in Sport Management.

Note:


For those seeking NYS teacher certification, NYS mandates one course that develops the skills necessary to provide instruction and progress of students with disabilities.

Additional Requirements for Program Completion/State Certification


  • Satisfactory completion of Content Core Requirements and General Education courses, including a foreign language
  • All teacher certification candidates must take and pass the New York State Teacher’s Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification which includes the Content Specialty Test in Physical Education
