Communication Sciences and Disorders
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders has programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The mission of the department is to provide students with a strong understanding of the connections between the scientific bases of our discipline and its clinical practices. We strive to prepare the finest professional and ethical research-based clinicians who can assess and treat children and adults with communication disorders within our scope of practice and from diverse cultural and linguistic background.
The undergraduate program provides pre-professional training in speech-language pathology and audiology within a strong liberal arts framework. Students in this program acquire basic knowledge of the discipline through study in the speech, language, and hearing sciences. The curriculum is designed to provide the necessary academic and clinical course work to prepare students for graduate study in communication disorders. The program also provides a strong foundation for careers in education, psychology, and the allied health professions. A unique component of this program is that students are provided with hands-on clinical experiences in both speech-language pathology and audiology.
The strategic plan of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders includes the following 5 goals:
- Continue to attract the most competent students.
- Use technology to make learning in the classroom and the clinical setting more efficient and exciting for our students.
- Continue to increase the program’s active research agenda by obtaining funding through grant submissions.
- Increase the diversity of clients seen in our clinic and externship programs in order to provide a broader clinical experience for our students.
- Continue to engage in interdisciplinary interaction and research with colleagues in related disciplines in order to identify common goals and initiatives.
Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. If a student’s GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be placed on academic probation for one semester. If a 3.0 is not achieved by the end of the probationary semester, the student will be dismissed from the program. Grades of C (C-, C, C+) in any two courses within the first 21 credits of SPE (0876) courses or Linguistics 103 will result in dismissal from the major. Students who earn a second grade of C (C-, C, C+), after earning the first C within the first 21 credits, or two grades of C (C-, C, C+) between 22 and 45 credits of SPE (0876) courses or Linguistics 103, will be required to repeat the course(s) and earn (a) grade(s) of B- or better. No more than one C grade (C-, C, C+) in English Composition/SPE (0876) 201 will be permitted. If a second C grade (C-, C, C+) in English Composition/SPE (0876) 201 is obtained, the course must be retaken until a grade of B- or better is earned. A grade of D or F in any SPE (0876) course or Linguistics 103 will result in dismissal from the major.
It is the responsibility of the student to consult with his or her academic adviser, the University Bulletin, and the Student Handbook, regarding program policies and procedures. Required courses both within and outside the department and General Education may not be taken Pass/Fail.
