Educational Strategy

Undergraduate social work education at Adelphi University applies the philosophy of the profession within a distinctive baccalaureate program. Graduates are prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary for generalist practice. They are educated to think, act, and work in a comprehensive, systematic manner, fulfilling the mission of the profession through the enhancement of individual potential and family functioning, and the development of constructive social policies, programs, and services. A sense of social responsibility is emphasized for the continuous improvement of people and their environments, and involvement in a wide spectrum of social concerns.

To respond to individual needs in changing times, the social worker must have a lifelong capacity to learn, along with the critical sensitivity to analyze new situations and apply knowledge. Believing that a liberal education is the surest means to these ends, the School of Social Work requires all entering freshmen to take part in the University General Education requirements.

SPRING-Ahead Route

The School of Social Work offers an undergraduate major leading to the Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree.  Students who do well in the program are eligible for the  Advanced Standing Program.  Application for advanced standing is reviewed by graduate social work admissions.  Requirements for completion of the Master in Social Work (M.S.W.) graduate degree from the advanced standing program include 32 academic credits and 600 hours of field instruction.

Students interested in an evening model of baccalaureate education may seek to enroll in the ANSWER Program. Based at Adelphi’s Manhattan Center in New York City and at the University’s Hauppauge Center, the program leads to the B.S.W. degree and encourages students who are already employed in social service agencies to apply.

The SPRING-Ahead route enables transfer students with at least 60 credits to begin program requirements in the spring semester, and, by taking courses in both the spring and summer semesters, to complete all degree requirements in an expedited 16 month time frame. Knowledgable advisers will aid in the selection and timing of courses.
