BIO (0105) 320 - Applied Wetland Ecology

Students will explore the fundamental ecological principles and apply these to our understanding of threatened wetland systems, especially in the context of the climate crisis and other anthropogenic impacts. A substantial component will be field work in salt marshes and other wetlands. Lecture and lab required.

Course Learning Goals: By the end of the course students will:

Explain ecological concepts (e.g. how communities and ecosystems are defined and studied).
Articulate the many problems wetlands face, through direct and indirect human impacts.
Discuss how theoretical and practical approaches can be used to alleviate threats to wetlands.
Interpret ecological information and data provided in the primary literature in an authoritative way.
Form testable hypotheses about ecological problems, and state clear and rationalized predictions.
Collect and analyze data, and write clear and concise formal scientific reports.
